The Beatles by Henry GrossmanSubheader

Best known for his classic contributions to publications such as Time and LIFE, Henry Grossman maintained a long and fruitful relationship with the Beatles during the 1960s . For over four decades, the vast majority of his Beatles archive (which tops a staggering 6,000 photographs) has been hidden away, awaiting rediscovery. The collection is unprecedented in its scope and intimacy. Now, for the first time ever, these images — most of which have never been published — are finally being made available to fans and collectors for purchase as limited edition prints exclusively through Rock Paper Photo.“The Beatles allowed just a few select photographers greater access than most,” says renowned Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn, “and no one was ever closer than Henry Grossman.” About Henry’s newly-released archive, he adds, ” It’s a thrill to see and a feast to learn from — pure unmistakeable layers of how it was.”Henry’s relationship with The Beatles began in early 1964 when he photographed them during their iconic first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. By 1965, he had become a trusted friend and companion, traveling with the group to The Bahamas and Austria during the production of Help!

Over the next three years, he would photograph them time and again behind closed doors, capturing a rare insider’s view of The Beatles’ world. Many of those rare photographs are featured in this Rock Paper Photo collection. “They were accustomed to seeing me with a camera, documenting everything that went on around me,” Henry explains. “It was simply part of me, part of who I was. More than that, I had become a friend. So when I pulled out my camera, no one thought twice about it. No one cared. It wasn’t seen as invasive.”

The existence of such a massive cache of never-seen images is one of the most unexpected and significant Beatles discoveries of recent years. From private moments at home with their loved ones, to candid moments off set and at recording sessions, Henry took more photos of The Beatles over a longer period of time than any other photographer. Amazingly, only a small fraction of the more than 6,000 images he took of the group has ever been available for purchase — until now.

Pang’s book of photographs, Instamatic Karma, was published in 2008. Besides the candid personal portraits, the book contains some historically important photographs, such as Lennonsigning the official dissolution of The Beatles partnership, and the last known photograph ofLennon and Paul McCartney together.

John Lennon Paul McCartney Last Photo Together

Here’s  a picture of Pang’s book and another photo of John and Paul taken that day with Keith Moon in between them.  That photo was part of a collection of Moon’s memorabilia auctioned off in 2000..

Pang answered some questions about the meeting…

How did the final Lennon-McCartney photo come about?

“It was during the Harry Nilsson sessions. He had popped in (the studio) the night before. . . . The next day, Paul came over with Linda and kids in tow. Everybody’s just hanging out at the Santa Monica beach house. Everyone’s just talking, just relaxing.”

Were you at that studio jam the night before?

“I was playing tambourine with Mal Evans. . . . All of a sudden I looked up and said, “Paul?” Johnturned around and said, “Oh, hello, Paul.” It was like they’d seen each other just the night before. John hadn’t seen him in a couple of years at that point.  Then Paul’s heading to the drums; he just went to Ringo’s drum kit and started to jam.  Stevie Wonder happened to drop by.  Stevie’son the electric piano, Linda’s on the Hammond B3. . . . Everybody was just hanging out and jamming.”

Here is a bit more info on the house the picture was taken at…

It was owned by the actor Peter Lawford who bought it from Louis B. Mayer, Lawford continued the tradition by hosting fellow Hollywood luminaries as well as his brothers-in-law, John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, on many occasions. Allegedly, Marilyn Monroe had been a frequent visitor, which greatly piqued John Lennon’s interest.

When John decided to produce Harry Nilsson’s Pussy Cats album, he thought it would be a great idea to have everyone who was working on it living under one roof.  John and I took the master bedroom. When we first saw it, he said: “So, this is where they did it,” referring to John F. Kennedy and Monroe. The other five bedrooms were occupied by Keith MoonHarryKlaus Voormann (the artist who had designed the cover for The Beatles’ album Revolver.)  The library, complete with official portrait of President Kennedy on the wall, was converted into a bedroom forRingo Starr.
